Peaceful coexistence of diverse ethnic, religious, and linguistic groups has historically been a hallmark of South Asian cultures. For this reason, many have referred to the region as a "salad bowl" of culture: a hodgepodge of different peoples, beliefs, and behaviors.

Soy el mundo will allow students to use prior knowledge of names, places, and ages from unit #1 through reading biographical excerpts of culturally relevant Spanish speaking figures. These excerpts, describing people's (dis)likes and physical characteristics, are authentic readings to enhance literature and grammatical concepts in 20 minute periods.

Students jump into learning how to spot fake news by playing a round of Factitious, the game. Next, they meet in groups to share strategies that helped them while playing the game. (A sample infographic of strategies is included, too.) Third, groups of students work together to be the first team to find all four fake news items in The Canadian Infiltration Fake News Game. 

"No taxation without representation!" was the cry. The colonists were not merely griping about the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act. They intended to place actions behind their words. One thing was clear — no colony acting alone could effectively convey a message to the king and Parliament. The appeals to Parliament by the individual legislatures had been ignored. It was James Otis who suggested an intercolonial conference to agree on a united course of action. With that, the Stamp Act Congress convened in New York in October 1765.

The states now faced serious and complicated questions about how to make their rules. What did it mean to replace royal authority with institutions based on popular rule? How was "popular sovereignty" (the idea that the people were the highest authority) to be institutionalized in the new state governments? For that matter, who were "the people"?

While the French had kept their end of the bargain by completing the statue itself, the Americans had still not fulfilled their commitment to erect a pedestal. In this lesson, students learn about the effort to convince a skeptical American public to contribute to the effort to erect a pedestal and to bring the Statue of Liberty to New York.

Students need to learn how to stay safe on the Internet. They need to learn how to recognize inappropriate materials, not talk to strangers and let a grown-up know if they encounter anything that appears to be wrong.

There is a free app for both Andoid and iOS that your students can use, but there are in-app purchases that may be necessary for any extra features needed for a professional looking product. The students will get their feet wet with the free version though.

Students will use the free site Into the Book to learn and practice strategies that will allow them to dig deeper into various reading concepts to gain a stronger understanding of text.

Children love to tell stories. They will make up something that happened to them just to be able to tell a story. In this lesson students will take a story they have written and publish it using Google Slides or PowerPoint. They will be able to insert pictures and speech bubbles to make their story come to life for their audience.
