Students need to check the accuracy of what they see on the Internet. Young children will especially have a difficult time knowing what is real or fake. Netsmartzkids has an excellent video for students to watch and learn how to fact check.

Digital Survival Skills Module 2: Types of Mis/Disinformation

The information revolution of the 21st century is as significant and transformative as the industrial revolution of the 19th century. In this unit, students – and by proxy their families – will learn about the challenges of our current information landscape and how to navigate them.

This unit is split into four modules. These modules can be done sequentially or stand on their own, depending on students’ needs and teachers’ timeframes. The modules culminate in a Digital Survival Skills Workshop hosted by students where they teach these skills to their community. If you plan to complete the culminating project, we suggest introducing it briefly at the beginning of Module 1 so students know what the end goal is. See Module 4 for introduction materials.

In this module (2 of 4), students learn to distinguish misinformation from disinformation. They explore examples of each and learn about the variety of motivations that cause people to create and share both types of false information.

Students jump into learning how to spot fake news by playing a round of Factitious, the game. Next, they meet in groups to share strategies that helped them while playing the game. (A sample infographic of strategies is included, too.) Third, groups of students work together to be the first team to find all four fake news items in The Canadian Infiltration Fake News Game.

The War of the Worlds, Fake News, and Media Literacy Primary Source Unit

The following unit offers multiple entry points into developing an understanding of media literacy. The unit framework and primary sources can be integrated into classrooms of grades 4-12. Each lesson has student objectives that can be accomplished within 40 minute periods over the course of several weeks. A midpoint writing assessment, whole class capstone debate, and final independentwriting assessment are included. Support materials are integrated into the lessons, and the primary source document pages can be found at the end of the unit guide.
